Before You Trade · Lesson 5 of 7
The Predator Economy
The most profitable trade in retail forex is selling things to people who want to believe. You are the product.
Around the real market sits a second industry that produces no trades and carries no risk: it farms beginners. Its genius is that it sells exactly what a loss-making trader most wants to buy — certainty, secrets and shortcuts. Learn its shapes before it learns your name:
Signal sellers. Paid Telegram/WhatsApp groups selling trade calls. The honest test: a genuinely profitable signal would be worth millions to its owner traded quietly — selling it for £50 a month only makes sense if the £50 is the product. Screenshots of winners are curated; the losers were never posted. (This, incidentally, is why our own site publishes a full verifiable ledger, losses first — it is the only honest answer to a dishonest genre.)
Gurus and lifestyle influencers. Rented supercars, airport lounges, "DM me to learn". Their income is course sales and broker referral commissions — meaning they are paid when you sign up and trade, not when you win. Ask any of them for a broker statement and watch the subject change.
Account managers and "trade for you" offers. Handing login details or money to a stranger who promises returns is the single most reliable way to lose 100%. This category includes the romance-adjacent "let me teach you to invest" scams that regulators now warn about by name — the pattern is affection, then a trading platform you cannot withdraw from.
Prop-firm challenges. Pay a fee, pass a profit target under tight rules, trade "their" capital. Some firms are legitimate; the economics still deserve honesty: industry analyses consistently put challenge pass rates below one in ten, and the fee income from the nine failures is the business model. You are not being recruited — you are the revenue.
Guaranteed or "consistent" returns · profit screenshots without a full loss ledger · pressure to act today · results only visible after you pay · unregulated brokers they insist you use · anyone who is paid per referral or per trade. Any ONE of these is enough. Walk.
The deepest defence is not a checklist — it is giving up the belief the predators feed on: that someone, somewhere, has a shortcut and will sell it to you for less than it is worth. Nobody profitable needs your £50.
