Before You Trade · Lesson 7 of 7
If You Still Want In
Read the first six lessons and still curious? Good — curiosity with open eyes is the only sane way in. Here is the on-ramp that doesn't end in a crater.
First, the honest alternative that every trading site hides: you do not have to do this. A boring index fund has historically beaten the results of the overwhelming majority of active traders, with zero hours of effort and no 2am chart-staring. If your goal is simply "grow my money", that is the defensible default — and if this lesson loses us a reader to a pension fund, we count it a win.
Still here? Then trade like someone who read lesson two. The on-ramp:
1. Use a properly regulated broker. In the UK, that means FCA-regulated — which buys you segregated client money, negative balance protection (you cannot lose more than your deposit) and the 30:1 leverage cap. The offshore broker offering 500:1 and a deposit bonus has removed every one of those protections. That is not a perk.
2. Demo until the platform is boring. Not to prove profitability — demo profits prove little, because nothing was at stake — but to make every mechanical action (orders, stops, sizing) automatic before emotions join the party.
3. Fund only what you can lose entirely. Treat the first account like tuition, because statistically it is. Never rent, never savings, never borrowed — the moment you trade money that matters, every psychological trap from lesson six doubles in strength.
4. Risk 1–2% per trade, sized properly. Stop distance and account size determine lots — our calculator does it. At 1% risk you can be wrong twenty times in a row and still be standing. That is not pessimism; twenty consecutive losses happen to good systems.
5. Write rules and keep a log. Entry conditions, stop, target, give-up time — written before the trade, every trade recorded, refusals included. Without a log you are not practising, you are just having experiences.
6. Expect years, not weeks. The realistic early goal is not income — it is surviving long enough, cheaply enough, to find out whether you have an edge at all. Most people find out they do not. The ones who find out cheaply get to try again with better rules.
Everything on this site is free and stays free: the Trade Like a Machine course teaches the rule-based approach in depth, the tools do the arithmetic, the trading weather page shows which days professionals sit out, and our live record shows a mechanical system being tested honestly in public — losses included. No upsell is coming. This page is what it says it is.
