Reading the Calendar Like an Operator

Five minutes on a Sunday evening replaces a week of being ambushed. Here is the exact routine.

Free economic calendars (ForexFactory's is the de-facto standard, and the data feed behind our own pages) list every scheduled release with three things that matter: the time, the currency, and an impact grade — usually red/orange/yellow. Everything in this course concerns the red tier: rate decisions, CPI, NFP and their peers. Here is how to actually use it:

1. Sunday: sweep the week. Five minutes. Note which days carry red flags and for which currencies. A Wednesday Fed decision plus Friday NFP means the week's real trading lives on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday — planning energy accordingly is half the value of the calendar.

2. Each morning: check before any entry. The question is precise: does a red-flag event for EITHER currency in my pair fall between now and when I will be flat? Both currencies — a GBPJPY trade is exposed to London's news and Tokyo's. And the whole holding window — a 9am entry held to the evening is exposed to a 2pm release just as surely as a 1:55pm entry.

3. Convert the times. Calendars default to various time zones and US releases land in the UK afternoon. One botched timezone conversion equals one surprise FOMC. Set the calendar to your local time once, and re-check when the clocks change — the UK and US shift on different dates in spring and autumn.

4. Respect the aftermath rule. Once a release is out and digested, its hazard is spent — the information is in the price. An event at 7am does not poison the whole day; an event at 7pm poisons everything before it that would still be open at 7pm. The gate is about your exposure window, not the calendar date.

From our own ledger

This entire lesson is automated on our site: the Trading Weather page applies exactly this routine — both currencies, full holding window, UK times — to every pair, every few hours, using the same code that stops our real account trading. Check your read against the machine's any morning.

The lesson in one line Sunday sweep, morning check, both currencies, whole holding window, correct timezone. Five minutes that make ambushes impossible.
